Mythbusters – Fun With Gas

Hmmm. can’t get enough of the Mythbusters YouTube-ness.

I Am An Insect

This weekend, we took the kids to the NC Museum of Art to see Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s I Am An Insect. Wow. It was incredible to watch and the live accompanying band was excellent. The kids had a great time and haven’t stopped talking about it…

Here are a couple pics. Note that if the one you’re looking at is a video, you’ll see a triangular “play” button on the middle of the picture that you’ll have to click on if you want to watch the vid.

Raleigh Greenway Rambling

I’ve recently spent a lot of time, recently, finding the connectors between bits of Raleigh’s awesome greenways. I’ve done a bit of scouting on my own, but recently came across several PDFs of maps that originally ran with N&O stories about the various trails. The N&O did a great job with these, going above and beyond the Raleigh Park and Rec version to help point out turns and transitions that you might miss.

  • Black Creek/Umstead/Reedy Creek -This trail will get you from Cary’s Godbold park on NW Maynard, past Lake Crabtree, through Umstead and the Museum of Art and eventually to Meredith College at the corner of Faircloth and Hillsborough. I’ve ridden about half of this with my 6-1/2 year-old son (Meredith to Edwards Mill). It’s a little hilly, but fun.
  • Crabtree greenway map -This will take you from SW Raleigh’s Oak Park neighborhood near Umstead, along Crabtree creek past Crabtree Valley Mall, past some beautiful downtown neighborhoods, through some (suprising!) nice wetlands, across Raleigh Blvd and evetually to Milburnie road, not far from Wake Med.

The section between Hodges and Raleigh Blvd is fun for the kids. There’s an interesting roller-coaster of a boardwalk and the wetlands are a great place to spot turtles and birds. There’s also a nice gazebo – a good spot for a break. There are some big hills on the eastern-most end of the path.

  • American Tobacco Trail map -This trail is on my to-do list!

Note that it’s really easy to get to the Crabtree greenway from Shelly lake, making it a nice starting-point for excursions.

I’m planning on doing some research into the Walnut Creek trail, too. They’re dedicating a new section this week. The official greenway map is dated 2007, so it’s not 100% up-to-speed on recent completions. It shows some proposed peices along this stretch – I’m hoping that this means continuous travel from Centennial Campus on the west end, to Walnut Creek in the east.

Cary posts its “Bike and Hike” map here.

No discussion of Raleigh adventure would be complete without a link to Joe Miller’s “Get Out! Get Fit!” blog.

Anything to add? Please let me know in the comments.

Note: As of this posting, many of these routes are temporarily closed due to flooding caused by Hannah. Check the Raleigh Parks and Recreation site before you head out. They’ll have closing alerts on their homepage.

Shimmer Wall shimmers

New Raleigh has some nice photos of the Shimmer Wall being lit for the first (official) time.

It's Alive

Finally got my site ported from a bunch’a Coldfusion and WordPress scraps in to a cohesive ‘Wordpress as CMS’ implementation. Still working on some loose threads, but most everything should be working!

And now that I’m running current code, I’ve turned comments back on.

Support Your Local Sub Shop

For as long as I can remember, Boondini’s in North Raleigh’s Celebration at Six Forks shopping center has been preparing the finest sandwiches and soups to be had in the area. Recently, a Mickey-D’s set up shop right in their front yard. “No prob,” I thought, “people are smart enough to pick the real deal over some McCrap, right?”

Looks like I might’a been wrong — the two times that I’ve visited since McD’s opening, Boondini’s has not seemed as bustling as I’m used to. No line at the register, tables empty even during the lunch-hour rush.

This makes me so very sad. Maybe I just happened to visit during a lull? Dunno, but consider this a call to arms: do the Right Thing and grab lunch at Boondini’s this week. You’ll be glad you did.

My personal faves, if you care to know: The baked chicken combo, “eat this” (egg salad and ham, grilled) on sunflower bread and fresh so-freakin’-good orange-ade.

#$*%$!!! – there's a word for that!

H&FJ report that Beetle Bailey cartoonist Mort Walker coined the term grawlix around 1964 to describe the line of punctuation used in lieu of swearing in comics.

you may not always agree with me

The N&O ran a story today about a man named L.F. Eason, a 29-year veteran of the NC Department of Agriculture that lost his job for refusing to lower the flag to half-staff to honor Jesse Helms’ passing.

Said Eason: “This is in no way a political decision. I simply do not feel it is appropriate to honor a person whose epitaph of government service was to have voted against or blocked every civil rights issue that came before the US Congress. His doctrine of negativity, hate, and prejudice cost North Carolina and our Nation much that we may never regain.”

I’ve gotten pretty sick of the trite coverage of Helms’ passing. I’ve decided that I’m going to consistently and repeatedly make an effort to tell people that I think they’re idiots. That way, when my friends, colleagues, etc. get interviewed on the occasion of my death, they can wholeheartedly state “I may not always have agreed with his opinions, but you always knew where he stood!”

Dearth of Good Coffee in North Raleigh

I was saddened to learn that The Percolator Lounge in North Raleigh is closing its doors on Saturday, July 12th. I’ve enjoyed coffee from Percolator since back in the days when it was Cup A Joe North. A nice place to meet a client, grab some coffee, share the free Wi-fi. I’m gonna miss it.

Sadly, it looks like N Raleigh’s remaining locations for java are Starbucks and it’s wannabees. No, thank you, I *don’t* want whip cream on my drink!
